RAMIREZ-VASQUEZ, J.D.; ISLAS-MORENO, A. y ROLDAN-SUAREZ, E.. Commercial capacity and competitiveness factors in maize (Zea mays) farmers in Oaxaca, Mexico. Revista bio ciencias [online]. 2020, vol.7, e897. Epub 18-Nov-2020. ISSN 2007-3380. https://doi.org/10.15741/revbio.07.e897.
The majority of maize farmers in Mexico have difficulties in making their activity profitable. This work aims to identify the factors that determine their Commercial Capacity, an indicator proposed in this study, in terms of their sociodemographic profile, their degree of connection in the commercial network and the innovations they make. The indicator was calculated based on the guidelines of the multicriteria analysis based on four variables (yield, price, proportion of the production destined for sale and number of customers), and the identification of the factors was made by three multiple linear regressions. It was found that a higher age (p < 0.05), a larger area (p < 0.05), a greater degree of connection to the commercial network (p < 0.1) and adoption of improved seed (p < 0.1), determine a better Commercial Capacity. Specifically, the yield is the variable most strongly favored by this combination. In conclusion, farmers with greater Commercial Capacity mitigate the adverse effect of competitive threats and are more likely to overcome the challenges of producing in a free market framework.
