Abstract

SANCHEZ RANGEL, Óscar. The first years of the bishopric of León and the influence of scholasticism. Valenciana [online]. 2018, vol.11, n.22, pp.159-190. ISSN 2007-2538.  https://doi.org/10.15174/rv.v0i22.354.

The aim of this paper is to explain some fundamental features that characterized the work of José de Jesús Díez de Sollano y Dávalos as the first bishop of the Diocese of León, Guanajuato, founded in 1863. It will be noted that the bishop focused on the revitalization of the parochial life and the organization of the Conciliar Seminary of the bishopric of León, that became a very active center for the diffusion of scholasticism. This was due to the fact that Díez de Sollano was a protagonist in the renovation process that Tomás de Aquino's philosophy had in Mexico in the 19th century, which became known as neotomism. Later, the Seminary and the Curia of León rejected and hindered the teaching of positivism in that city, so that this paper contributes to reflect on the local variations that had its expansion in Mexico.

Keywords : Scholasticism; Neotomism; Positivism; Díez de Sollano y Dávalos; León Bishopric.
