At the end of the nineteenth-century, in the Mexican press numerous scientific papers intended to educate the reader in order to modernize the society and the economy. The aim of the research is to understand the interest of the Editors of The Mexican Economist to spread the botanical instruction to an audience interested in trade issues. This economic politic it is related to the group of "Scientists" who sought to promote the development of the country. The methodology is based on the social history of science that is interested in the role of authors and readers of the press around the dissemination of useful science. The newspaper announced botanical strategies to educate the reader in solving agricultural problems, exploitation of native flora and the notion that science was a rational way to modernize rural areas.
