This essay considers the miseries of academic life in the Research Universities of North America and proposes a program for intellectual regeneration that is based in the enlightened traditions of modern history. As such, the dystopian reality of current academic life is here contrasted with the enlightened utopia that Francis Bacon presents in his New Atlantis. The main argument of this essay is that in order to regenerate intellectual life, it is necessary to recuperate the universal ideals of the enlightenment and generate new non-academic spaces for the expression, as much scientific as artistic, of a coherent human consciousness that unifies the expansion of knowledge to the betterment of life.
