Abstract
GONZALEZ MELLO, Renato. Information, Data, and Metadata for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage. Intervención (Méx. DF) [online]. 2018, vol.9, n.17, pp.6-21. ISSN 2007-249X.
The aim of this ESSAY is to contribute to the generation of information systems on cultural heritage and its conservation. It examines the history of the cataloguing of images and objects of Mexican cultural heritage in the 1960s and 1970s, and reviews recent legal changes that require both the registration of cultural heritage and its publication in open, interoperable and standardized data formats. A historical analysis of the notions of information, data, and metadata is done, tracing the origins of this last concept to the Cold War. The difficulties in developing an information system related to the conservation of Mexican cultural heritage are listed: the legalism of the norms, the organization of information around objects, the plurality of scientific data formats, and a scarce development of specialized lexicology, among others. Finally, some proposals on such a data system are outlined.
