Abstract

ZUCARELLI, Graciela Viviana  and  HAMMERLY, Rosana del Carmen. Determination of envelope curves for observed and expected maximum flow in the Republic of Argentina. Tecnol. cienc. agua [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.1, pp.187-194. ISSN 2007-2422.

Maximum recorded and expected flow can be related to the contributing area of a basin. The curve that covers all the points in this graph is called the "maximum flow envelope." The maximum flow envelopes observed are not associated with return probabilities or periods, and their imaging makes it possible to see the maximum magnitude of the flows occurring in the study region. Nevertheless, expected maximum flow envelopes correspond to values associated with specific return periods. This paper presents the maximum flow envelope curves for each of the 124 basins in the Republic of Argentina. The curves were obtained using data updated as of 2003 from the National Subsecretary of Water Resources. Creager and Francou-Rodier methodologies and an exponential curve are presented. Based on the results, a Francou-Rodier coefficient was determined for the Uruguay River system, which is among the 50 maximum coefficients recorded worldwide.

Keywords : hydrological regions; probability distributions; Argentina; basins.
