Resumen

GUERRA-COBIAN, Víctor Hugo et al. Use of NEXRAD information for hydrological modeling in watersheds with sparse rain gauge networks. Tecnol. cienc. agua [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.3, pp.35-48. ISSN 2007-2422.

This paper presents the process to adjust precipitation data obtained from weather radar images using GIS, for use in distributed hydrologic modeling. The main objective was to evaluate the quality of radar data using hydrologic model simulations and comparisons with simulations generated from rain gauge data. To this end, three events were simulated, including the flood that occurred in the Escondido River basin, Mexico, in April 2004. Hourly data were used from weather radar located in Laughling AFB, Texas, USA, which consist of binary files from a list of values of precipitation in mm. The quality of radar data was performed by a correlation analysis with data from automated rain gauge stations. The results indicate that data pairs exist in the radar-rain gage comparison, in which the radar is calculated as "zero" and the gauge registers a value greater than zero, or vice versa. Moreover, the explained variance between the precipitation data calculated from radar information and rain gauge measurements from the stations in the analysis was less at the hourly scale than the daily scale. Finally, simulations with radar precipitation data for extreme events show that the simulated hydrograph accurately reproduces the observed hydrograph. On the other hand, in the simulated hydrograph for rainfall data, neither the peak discharge nor the hydrograph shape was adequately simulated.
