ESCOTO GARCIA, Teófilo et al. Chemical-micrographic and dasometric characterization of three pine species and their viability for integral harvesting. Rev. mex. de cienc. forestales [online]. 2017, vol.8, n.41, pp.109-138. ISSN 2007-1132.
Three pine species --Pinus douglasiana, Pinus devoniana and Pinus oocarpa-- were evaluated in a plot located in the La primavera forest, in Jalisco. After taking the dasometric measurements and establishing the biomass balance (of wood, braches, bark and needles), the stem-wood samples were prepared for chemical analysis, according to the TAPPI methods. In regard to the dasometric study and biomass balance given herein, we suggest the viability of the exploitation of the studied pine species to be as follows: P. douglasiana, with the highest biomass content (45 %), can be applied in various timber products (furniture, structures and laminated wood); P. devoniana, with the highest bark content (23 %) is recommended for bark applications (phenols and tannins), and P. oocarpa, with the highest content of needles (22 %), is proposed for chlorophyll and essences. On the other hand, the effect of the chemical composition of the wood (75.4 % holocellulose, 48.1 % alpha cellulose, and 12.1 % pentosans) on the physic-mechanical properties of standard paper sheets was significantly better in P. devoniana, which suggests it as the most viable species for pulp extraction and manufacture of kraft paper.
