BOBADILLA SOTO, Encarnación Ernesto; ESPINOZA ORTEGA, Angélica  e  MARTINEZ CASTANEDA, Francisco Ernesto. Swine production dynamics in Mexico (1980 - 2008). Rev. mex. de cienc. pecuarias [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.3, pp.251-268. ISSN 2448-6698.

The objective of the present study was evaluating Mexican swine production dynamics and identifying its critical points, changes and modifications between 1980 and 2008. Mexico as whole unit, its States and the five socioeconomic regions of the country were analyzed. Data were obtained from SAGARPA, Banco de Mexico (Banxico) and from the Economy Ministry. Growth, trend and real price indicators were assessed. Economic and financial policies affected payment capacity of farmers, as animal stocks decreased and swine production dynamics evolved negatively. Trade policy had a negative effect on Mexican swine production as most foreign pork products were imported at prices below domestic costs of production. Slaughter policy benefitted only one sector. Domestic swine production was carried out mainly in the States of Jalisco, Sonora, Guanajuato and Michoacán. The States showing larger growth in swine production in the period analyzed were Yucatan, Puebla, Sonora and Guanajuato and those showing a greater decline were Mexico, Jalisco and Michoacán.
