It is estimated that three quarters of the cultivated area with corn in Chiapas are landrace or native varieties and advanced generations of improved varieties. Twelve native corn varieties of different grain color (white, yellow, red and black) provided by subsistence farmers from the warm region of Chiapas, Mexico, plus two commercial checks were evaluated in 2009 at two locations in order to know some characteristics like silking, height, diameter, length and content of soluble solids in cob and grain yield. Green ear characteristics and grain yield were statistically higher in Ocozocoautla, except soluble solids content, which was higher in Villaflores; were also significantly different between varieties, except content of soluble solids; overall, plants from landraces were more late, taller and had longer and thicker cobs than hybrids; varieties from different grain color had corn with equal soluble solids content and grain yield, the hybrid check significantly outperformed native varieties.
