Resumen

JACINTO-HERNANDEZ, Carmen; GARZA-GARCIA, Dagoberto  y  GARZA-GARCIA, Ramón. Primavera-28, growth habit II rainfed bean variety for the High Valleys of the Mexican Central plateau. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.3, pp.651-657. ISSN 2007-0934.

Primavera-28 is the first bean variety with growth habit II developed for the rainfed conditions of the High Valleys of the Central Mexican plateau. It was created to respond to the need of a dull black variety with a shorter crop cycle than that of the existing varieties adapted to the High Valleys. The new variety was obtained through simple crosses by mass selection to generation F4. Individual selection for disease resistance, grain quality and yield potential was performed on F5, and from F6 to F10 mass selection was again used for the same traits. Because its development cycle is intermediate in duration (102 to 105 days to physiological maturity), it has advantages over other varieties of the same commercial type when early frosts occur. Moreover, grain yield is higher. It is resistant to anthracnosis (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum Sacc & Magn. Briosi & Cav.), common blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv phaseoli (Smith) Dye) and root rot (Pythium and Rhizoctonia), and it is tolerant to rust (Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.:Pers.) Unger). It has excellent culinary quality and high protein content (23 to 26%). Because it is a descendent of Jamapa, Primavera-28 contains bioactive compounds that can reduce risk of cardiovascular diseases by, specifically, decreasing arterial hypertension.
