ANDRADE-HOYOS, Petra et al. Totipotency in avocado seedling resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.2, pp.361-373. ISSN 2007-0934.

The identification of resistant seedlings from native Mexican avocado race, naturally respond to infection by oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi. This response is due to genetic variation based on survival and totipotent capacity after inoculation with oomycete. The aim of this study was to select resistant seedlings to induce totipotency (formation of new shoots) after inoculation. Selecting for resistance avocado seedling, two trials were conducted, in the first trial six avocado seedling Atlixco, Tepeyanco, Tepetl, Toliman, Colin V-33 and Thomas genotypes (of 5 cm and 15 to 20 cm height) were inoculated with a virulent isolate of P. cinnamomi; in the second trial only seedlings from Tepeyanco and Atlixco genotypes (5 cm height) were inoculated. Inoculation of seedlings in advanced stages of growth (from 15 to 20 cm height) and juvenile stage (5 cm) allows detecting resistance to P. cinnamomi. The seedling population of Atlixco is an important source of resistance, because it had more new shoots of totipotent and asymptomatic seedlings. Toliman, Tepetl and Thomas genotypes in juvenile stage are considered susceptible. Colin V-33 can be a resistant rootstock to P. cinnamomi. Atlixco and Tepeyanco are considered resistant-tolerant to marchitamiento del aguacatero (avocado wilt) and cancro (canker) caused by P. cinnamomi.
