Resumen

MONTES GARCIA, Noé et al. RB-Norteño, grain sorghum for drought areas. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2014, vol.5, n.spe7, pp.1337-1342. ISSN 2007-0934.

In Mexico, sorghum is grown on 1.95 million hectares, worth mentioning that Tamaulipas State has 48.1% where a production of 2.5 million tons, equivalent to 42% of the national total (SIAP, 2013) is obtained. However, this production is considered low due to the presence of drought caused by low rainfall (400-600 mm per year) in the 614 000 hectares under rainfed conditions. It is estimated that during the autumn-winter cycle, production losses recorded constantly, reaching grain yields of 1.34 t ha-1 (SIAP, 2013). Compounding this problem, there is the presence of diseases, among which are the Charcoal rot caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid, the head smut caused by Sporisorium reilianum (Khun) Langdon & Fullerton and ergot Frederikson caused by Claviceps africana, Mantle & de Milliano. The first is the most important, causing losses of up to 100% of the total production time during the grain filling period of drought and high temperatures (Edmunds, 1964; Williams et al., 1994; Montes and Díaz, 2006) are presented.

Palabras llave : diseases; precipitation and yield.
