TADEO ROBLEDO, Margarita et al. Productivity of differents combinations of two maize hybrids with andro-sterile and fertile seed. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.3, pp.273-287. ISSN 2007-0934.

This study was carried out with two maize hybrids, Puma 1075 and Puma 1076, to evaluate their productivity when combining 11 different proportions of fertile and andro-sterile seed combinations, ranking from 100% fertile seeds, up to 100% andro-sterile seeds. The aim of the study was to determine the productive capability of these treatments. These proportions were evaluated during the 2007 spring-summer season, with two experiments in the Rancho Almaráz; in the Cuautitlán School of Higher Studies, National Autonomous University of Mexico (FESC-UNAM); and a third one in Santa Lucía of Prías, Valley of Mexico Experimental Station (CEVAMEX); at a altitude of 2 250 m. The experiments were handled in a desing of completely random cluster, in a factorial arrangement. The hybrid Puma 1075 and 1076 expressed a similar yield. The environment of Santa Lucía de Prías, showed an average yield of 8 366 kg ha-1, for the hybrids evaluated with different proportions of andro-sterile and fertile seeds; this was statistically different in the environments in FESC-UNAM. The highest yields corresponded to the combination of fertile and andro-sterile seeds; with100% andro-sterile seeds (8 146 kg ha1), 90% andro-sterile seeds + 10% fertile seeds (7 910 kg ha1), 80% andro-sterile seeds + 20% fertile seeds (7 913 kg ha1); these yields represent an advantage in comparison to the treatment with 100% fertile seeds. The proportions of 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% andro-sterile seeds, with their fertile counterpart, are good seed combination options, showing 23.2%, 23.3%, 16.2% and 19.6% higher yields in comparison to the treatment with 100% fertile seeds.
