Abstract

ARELLANO VAZQUEZ, José Luis; VIRGEN VARGAS, Juan  and  AVILA PERCHES, Miguel Angel. H-66 maize hybrid for the central highlands of the Mexico and Tlaxcala states. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.2, pp.257-262. ISSN 2007-0934.

The new maize hybrid H-66 was developed in the Valley of Mexico Experimental Field (CEVAMEX) of the National Forestry, Agriculture and Cattle Research Institute (INIFAP). This hybrid adapts to the high valleys (> 2 200 m) in the states of Mexico and Tlaxcala. H-66 was obtained from three lines (M43/M44)//M52; M52 is a line of the maize program of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), while lines M43 and M44 were derived from a creole line derived from a location in the higher area in the state of Michoacán. H-66 is a hybrid with a white grain, recommended for irrigation and rainy conditions. The yield of hybrid H-66 varies from 6.5 to 10.5 t ha-1, and surpasses by 7 to 12% the yield of commercial hybrids from private companies, which are grown in the area and regional diseases such as ear rot (Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon, perfect state Giberella fujikuroi Sawada) and ear rust (Sporisorium reilianum= Sphacelotheca reiliana). The grain of maize H-66 is recommended for the tortilla and tortilla dough industry.

Keywords : adaptation; hybrid maize; yield.
