Abstract

TORRES RODRIGUEZ, Duilio; CUMANA, Adriana; TORREALBA, Odalis  and  POSADA, Diana. Use of vetiver for the fitoremediation of chromiun in residual sludges in a tennery. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.2, pp.175-188. ISSN 2007-0934.

This study evaluated the use of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) for the phytoremediation of residual sludge in the leather industry, which presents high chromium values (21 000 mg kg-1), given that large amounts of this metal are used during the tanning process to keep the leather from rotting; likewise, a substrate was evaluated, which has attributes that improve the edaphic conditions for the growth of vetiver. For this purpose, an experimental study was carried out with a random design, which evaluated the following treatments: T1= polluted sludge without vetiver plants; T2= polluted sludge + vetiver plants; T3= polluted sludge + organic fertilizer + vetiver plants; T4= organic fertilizer + vetiver plants. After 15 and 45 days of having planted the vetiver, the concentrations of chromium in the sludge and the plant were estimated. Plant height, root biomass and aerial parts were also measured, based on dry weight at 7, 15, 30 and 45 after planting. The data were studied with analysis of variance and Tukey tests, using the program INFOSTAT 1.0.1. Results showed a drop in chromium levels in treatment T2, in respect to initial sludge values in 30% at 15 days and in 9% at 45 days. However, results indicate that the plant absorbed 3.49 mg of chromium in treatments in which vetiver was grown. This treatment displayed a concentration of 596.92 mg kg-1 of chromium in foliar tissue, signi?cantly higher than what was found in treatments with vetiver + sludge + fertilizer, where the percentage of chromium absorbed was 1.11% or a concentration of 190.3 mg kg-1 of chromium in foliar tissue.

Keywords : chromium; heavy metals; phytoremediation; pollution; vetiver.
