This study aims to identify entrepreneurship motivation and competitive success factors for entrepreneurs of small business in the Mountain of Guerrero region, México. A questionnaire with close-ended questions, based on a Likert scale, of variables related to economical, psychological, social and cultural factors was applied to identify differences in entrepreneurship and competitive success of the entrepreneurs. These differences were measured based on the importance each entrepreneur assigned to business development activities. Mann-Whitney test was used to evaluate statistically significant differences in competitive success between Huamuxtitlán and Metlatónoc municipalities. Results indicate that most of the entrepreneurs were young people, mainly women, whom began their business using their own money and operated their business in the informality. Income improvement was the main economic factor that motivates to become an entrepreneur. The main psychological factor was trust in business success, and spouse motivation was important. The main social factor was unemployment, while good location of the business was an important spatial factor. There were statistically significant differences (P ≤ 0.01) in all entrepreneurship factors between both municipalities. Results of fitting the binary logistic regression indicates that age, number of years of education received and business location were the main variables determining business performance and success.
