LOPEZ DE LA MADRID, María Cristina; ESPINOZA DE LOS MONTEROS CARDENAS, Adolfo; ROJO MORALES, Diana  e  ROJAS GARCIA, Alberto. Provision of financial support from parents in higher education. Nova scientia [online]. 2012, vol.4, n.8, pp.147-164. ISSN 2007-0705.

To know the perspective of parents on the importance of the higher level, and the provision of financial support towards offspring who entered al that level, we conducted a research in the Centro Universitario del Sur (CUSur), of the University of Guadalajara, to investigate, among other things, the education level of parents, the level of monthly spending and the importance of further education of their offspring. Method: For the collection of information, we designed a survey type instrument was applied to 812 parents of freshmen during the third week of August, in 2010. The final number of surveys collected was 558 (68.8%), the information processing work was done on an Excel database, and using SPSS program v. 18. For the presentation of the results, two faces were worked: the first order by calculating descriptive frequencies and the second order inferencial by Chi square test and contingence tables, because we working with nominal variables. Results: 95.2% of parents are willing to support their offspring financially in college. Of these, 77.8% decided to support them throughout the race, despite the 46.6% of these parents, is at the level of monthly expenditure of low and medium low. In this study, no relationship was found between father's education and financial support available and support time. Discussion or Conclusion: The financial support that parents give their offspring at their school is related to the resources they have, beyond their own level of education. However, it identifies a significant percentage of low-income parents who are willing to support them throughout the race, despite its financial constraints. The perception of the importance of continuing whit formal education for a larger period of time, is related to personal satisfactions (achieve the goals in life and gain knowledge) rather than the economic aspects (to make more money), so the study corroborates the results obtained by other researcher, but also highlights the social and cultural importance that parents give to this level.
