Sport mega-events significantly change the social, political, economic, environmental and urbanistic reality of their host cities. In particular, these large scale projects have considerable impacts on incoming tourism during and after their happenings. The analysis of mega-events impacts for the country or the host city can focus on objective impacts or on perceptions of residents in host communities. This paper analyzes the impacts 2014 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil in both methodological perspectives. The evaluation of the objective impacts was conducted through extensive literature and documental review, while the evaluation of the subjective impact used primary information collected through 3 770 interviews with residents of the twelve host cities of the event. Data were analyzed through structural equation models to examine the structural relationship between the perceived impact and popular support for the event. The results show that perceptions of both positive and negative impacts are significant determinants of the support for the hosting of megaevents.
