Abstract

ESPINOSA CORIA, Horacio  and  FIGUEROA DE LA FUENTE, Mariana. Melipona honey production as a sustainable tourist attraction in Quintana Roo. El periplo sustentable [online]. 2017, n.33, pp.486-527. ISSN 1870-9036.

This paper proposes a path to tourism diversification in Quintana Roo by making use of cultural objects which reanimate and protect the physical and immaterial heritage of the rural maya communities. Literature review clarifies concepts such as culture tourism, characterizes gastronomy routes and realizes the feasibility of melipona honey production by local producers. This research is both descriptive and action oriented. One of its findings depicts some international, national and local cases of culture, culinary and eco tourism, as opposite models to the traditional sun, sea and sand tourism product. Additionally, it is shown that traditional forms of melipona honey production and consumption, constitute a valuable asset which enables tourists to conceive it as part of the maya local culture and as tourist attraction.

Keywords : tourism; culture tourism; gastronomy routes.
