Abstract

MONTERRUBIO, Carlos  and  OSORIO GARCIA, Maribel. Local attitudes to residential tourism: an analysis based on the attitudinal/behavioural matrix. El periplo sustentable [online]. 2017, n.33, pp.221-250. ISSN 1870-9036.

Based on the attitudinal/behavioural matrix, this research aimed to analyse local attitudes towards second home tourism in a Mexican destination. Using in depth interviews with local residents, the study confirms the matrix’s postulations. It confirms that people in destinations hold heterogeneous attitudes and behaviours, which can be experienced in different ways and degrees. It reveals that in the case of second home tourism, favourable attitudes are not shaped only by the economic benefits of second home tourism but also by the type of empathic social relationships established between locals and tourists. Unfavourable attitudes are determined by local’s feeling of being collectively affected as a consequence of tourism development projects that are externally planned.

Keywords : local attitudes; second home tourism; tourism impacts; attitudinal/behavioural matrix; Huatulco; Mexico.
