Resumen

GOMEZ BANUELOS, Denisse; HUESCA REYNOSO, Luis  y  HORBATH CORREDOR, Jorge Enrique. A study of Occupational Gender Segregation in Tourism sector of Mexico. El periplo sustentable [online]. 2017, n.33, pp.159-191. ISSN 1870-9036.

The tourism sector, one of the largest generators of wealth and employment in the world, offers women almost twice as opportunities to become entrepreneurs than any other economic sector. In developing countries, tourism is a potential source of employment for them, for the low barriers to work, flexible working hours, part-time and low educational levels required. Hence, tourism is one of the sectors that has greater female participation. However, it is a fact that women's work concentrates the most precarious jobs, poorly paid and low-skilled jobs. Therefore, the objectives of this work are to quantify the degree of occupational segregation and its variation over the last ten years (2005-2014), as well as occupational classification and hierarchical distribution. The database used is the National Survey of Occupation and Employment. The results show that occupational segregation in the tourism sector represents only a third of the existing national segregation and that women still keep in occupational categories with the lowest wages of the population.
