Resumen

RAGA ROSALENY, Vicente. The Essay and Skeptical Doubt. On the Origin of the Essay in Early Modernity. En-clav. pen [online]. 2016, vol.10, n.19, pp.125-144. ISSN 2594-1100.

People usually consider Michel de Montaigne to be the first modern author dedicated to writing essays, and this is, without doubt, the contemporary genre par excellence in philosophy (dialogues, epistles or treaties of the past having been forgotten). Nevertheless, his pioneering character in this sense is not accompanied by the same appreciation with regard to the content of his work. People usually say too that Montaigne was a mere transmitter of Ancient Scepticism, recovered during the Renaissance, without significant contributions or his own philosophy.

It is the purpose of this article to show the relevant role of Montaigne, not only in the recuperation and transmission of scepticism in Modernity, but also in its configuration. In this respect, the contributions of the French thinker become fully relevant and render him a philosopher who deserves to be reconsidered.

Palabras llave : Essay; pyrrhonism; renaissance; sextus empiricus; scepticism.
