This essay inquires about the research on the principle of unity. For this purpose I examine the unity in connection with the thinking. The thinking is understood in three senses: as the unity of inquiry's subject, as the unity of the historical development and as vital principle of philosophical work. These senses display the possibility to continue the research on the truth. The dialogue with the tradition and the senses given by it to thinking's concept let us understand that research's difficulty, not in order to yield to it, but to contribute in the search. The purpose is to make one's way between the previously pondered, in order to rethink it and enrich it from the current epoch.
