CHAVEZ JIMENEZ, Daniar. La inserción del ecopesimismo en la literatura contemporánea. La costa de los mosquitos. En-clav. pen [online]. 2014, vol.8, n.15, pp.63-84. ISSN 2594-1100.
In the XIX century the idea of decadence divided the notions of culture and civilization and from that point on, culture began to symbolize the development of man: the civilization, control, use and development of certain practices brought about by technological advances. For the American author Paul Theroux, however, this belligerence represents a transitory situation where destiny, chaos and the self-destructive will of man come into play. As these ideas/facts converge, western cosmogony has dictated the interference in the cosmogony of nonwestern countries, at least since the Spanish Conquest. This confrontation, considering it a conflict of ideas, is one of the main topics of the literary work analyzed here. This discussion is the basis in establishing a dialogue between the work of Theroux and philosophical, ecological, historical and social context in North-South relations.
