In this article I will review the issue of death as a symbolic element in Los años falsos and El libro vacío from Josefina Vicens. In both books the death is present as a theme or as a symbolic element for social criticism. The author, using the resources that fiction provides, performs critical metaphoric portraits of members of middle-class families in Mexico City from mid-twentieth century. Vicens questions roles assumed by members of two families living in Mexico City. Through these representations criticizes the symbolic forms that kill the vital spark. The Garcias live the becoming in the city and the assumption of duty as elements that will be killing the Action creatures. The Fernández in the language the roles involved of the new habitat will kill each other, seeking to grant life. Forms of existence, through the representations, the author portrays and questions.
