BARCELATA EGUIARTE, Blanca Estela y GOMEZ-MAQUEO, Emilia Lucio. Fuentes de estrés y su influencia en la adaptación psicológica en jóvenes con adversidad económica. En-clav. pen [online]. 2012, vol.6, n.12, pp.31-48. ISSN 2594-1100.
Economic hardships, or poverty, are considered a high-risk factor for adolescent development by its association with stressful life events, nevertheless there are few studies in México. The aim of this study was to analyze the sources of stress and the role of stressful life events on the adaptation in adolescent students of low-income areas of México City. A sample of 230 students, aged 13 to 18 years, from public high school participated. Low-income and stress were markers of risk. Under the same conditions one group showed adaptation (resilient group) and the other one did not (non-resilient group). The non-resilient group showed more stressors in all areas than the resilient group. The family, personal, and social areas have a negative impact on adaptation and are predictors of maladjustment. This data can be useful in designing programs that include families. It is recommended further research with other samples.
