SOLA AYAPE, Carlos. El manejo discursivo del pasado en el restablecimiento de las relaciones entre España y México. En-clav. pen [online]. 2007, vol.1, n.1, pp.167-189. ISSN 2594-1100.
In the spring of 1977, when the Spanish transition to democracy was in full swing, Spain and México resumed diplomatic relations after a forty year period of political distance and hostility. From within this context, along with other factors, the first encounters between the representatives of both States served a double purpose: First, they served to make a strategic reading of past events in order to rescue those that would foster unification and strengthening of diplomatic ties. Second, they served to push aside those episodes that could cause friction or conflict between the two nations. The discourses give evidence of a new diplomatic language answering to the requirements for unification and annulling the past. Terms such as conqueror, colony, Franco, Franquism, exile, and the Second Spanish Republic were purged from the dialog. This intentional resignifying of the past was intended to create a break with what had gone before. It was done in order to create a future of understanding and cooperation free of obstacles.
