Throughout the first three decades of this century the Mexican political regime has intensified the crisis of human rights. Various classes and social sectors have been stripped of assets and rights: landless, precarious workers and unemployed young people without education and work expectations, and victims of state and criminal violence, among others. Widespread looting and violence threatens undocumented migrants crossing the country. From Central America, a relentless exodus of people flee poverty and violence in an effort to rebuild their lives and find sources of paid work. The destination is the United States: the engine of the global economy now in crisis, engulfing large amounts of surplus generated in the peripheries of the plant and feeding off of cheap labor, among them the core of undocumented immigrants. First one must go through Mexico, an inhospitable territory where institutions and state agents criminalize, arrest and deport unarmed nomadic caravans. Some travel clandestinely aboard a freight train, the Bestia, where they are exposed to the harsh weather and risk of accidents, also suffering assault and rape by criminal gangs that may kidnap, extort, recruit or murder. The degradation of human dignity is reduced to its minimum expression: migrants are merely merchandise who must work to survive, or worse, become bodies to be extorted by others, traded and destroyed.
