TINAJERO, Romeo. Beak deformity in Black-crested Titmouse (Baeolophus atricristatus). Huitzil [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.1, e646.  Epub 20-Out-2023. ISSN 1870-7459.  https://doi.org/10.28947/hrmo.2023.24.1.669.

Beak deformities are rare, although they have been documented in different parts of the world, mainly in North America and Europe. I present records of three individuals of Black-crested Titmouse (Baeolophus atricristatus) with beak deformities, registered on 26 May 2018, in the Ranchito de Juárez locality, municipality of Zaragoza, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The birds were observed when they attended a rustic feeder. The upper mandible of their beaks (maxilla or rhinotheca) had an abnormal prolongation, crossing the lower mandible of the beak. These records are novel and represent the first known cases of avian keratin disorder in the species.
