Abstract

CAMPOS-RODRIGUEZ, José Ismael; FLORES-LEYVA, Xhail; PEREZ-VALERA, Denisse  and  GARCIA-MARTINEZ, Diana Pamela. Breeding of Golden Eagle in Southeast Zacatecas, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2019, vol.20, n.1, e495. ISSN 1870-7459.  https://doi.org/10.28947/hrmo.2019.20.1.394.

Studies of reproductive rate, nesting success, and reproductive productivity are useful to evaluate the population status of birds of prey. We introduce the occupation status, nest number, nesting success and productivity in three Golden Eagle nesting areas, at southeast Zacatecas. We reported the age of the members of the pair, active nests distances, and main anthropogenic land modifications. We followed the reproductive activity for four periods, between 2014 and 2017, in three areas. We observed the presence of three pairs in each area, composed of a single adult or one adult and one immature. Of the eight active nests located, five of them were successful. The average nesting success was of 33%. The nesting productivity was 0.50 fledgling/nest (including successful and failed nests). The average minimal distance between nests and the nearest modification was of 889.33 m. The nesting productivity at southeast Zacatecas is lower than other north-central regions of Mexico possibly due to age or active nest proximity to anthropogenic activities. No nests were located in a protected natural area, and their does not exist a conservation strategies for them at the moment. We encourage establishment of a natural protected area in the region.

Keywords : Age; anthropogenic landscape modification; nest; productivity.
