The records of species in new localities are of particular interest to develop integral conservation strategies. The distribution of bird species is usually well-known, but the lack of information about some species, climatic change, land-use modifications, among other factors lead to variations in their distribution and their subsequent detection in different localities. The Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens) is a species of the Parulidae family that can be found in Mexico mostly as a fall transient, and sparsely as a winter resident, in particular along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. There are additional records in Oaxaca, Nuevo León, Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur. In November 2012, we recorded a single female of S. caerulescens in a disturbed habitat area in Tabasco. This is the first record of the species in the state. Based on previous knowledge about the species wintering range, it is interesting the time of year when the record was made because it would be expected to find the observed individual predominantly in the Antilles. Our observation indicates that S. caerulescens increases its habitat-use versatility during its fall-winter migration period. We believe that there is an important need to increase the knowledge about the distribution and habitat use of this species in Mexico.
