This report updates and summarizes the knowledge on the bird diversity of the Cupatitzio river sub-basin in Michoacan, Mexico. We gathered information on 8,967 records that made up a list of 301 species belonging to 52 bird families, representing 53.7% of the species and the 68.4% of the families known to the state of Michoacan, outstanding the fact that in the sub-basin we have found almost 70% of the endemic Mexican species reported for Michoacan. Most of the species are permanent residents (221), followed by winter migrant visitors (75), summer residents (3), and only two accidental records. We identified 87 species of conservation concern, which are included under endemism categories and listed in the Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010). The data allowed the addition of new records for Michoacan and the distributional range extension for eight species: Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens), Red-billed Pigeon (Patagioenas flavirostris), Eared Poorwill (Nyctiphrynus mcleodii), Northern Potoo (Nyctibius jamaicensis), Thick-billed Parrot (Rhynchopsittapachyrryncha), the Worm-eating Warbler (Helmitheros vermivorum), Lucy's Warbler (Oreothlypis luciae), and Fan-tailed Warbler (Basileuterus lachrymosus). Information about biodiversity in the area has been fundamental to create proposals with a comprehensive and multidisciplinary perspective to solve social and environmental issues at the sub-basin.
