Abstract

FONSECA, Juanita et al. Aquatic birds of the Acuitlapilco lake, Tlaxcala, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.2, pp.104-109. ISSN 1870-7459.

We studied waterbird abundance and seasonal distribution in the Acuitlapilco lake at Tlaxcala, Mexico. We recorded a total of 36 waterbird species with a total cumulative abundance of 48,794 individuals from February 2011 through January 2012. Twelve of the recorded species were residents, 10 were migratory and 14 were transient species or accidental records. We observed that the highest species richness and abundance were in winter, when most migratory species arrived. Our results show that this area is important for resident and migratory aquatic birds, and reflects the necessity of additional studies on the role of the continental lakes as biodiversity reservoirs.

Keywords : seasonality; wetlands; monitoring.
