Abstract

RUEDA-HERNANDEZ, Rafael; RUIZ-SANCHEZ, Angelina  and  HERRERA-ALSINA, Leonel. First record of the Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) for the city of Xalapa, Veracruz. Huitzil [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.2, pp.169-172. ISSN 1870-7459.

We recorded a Great Horned Owl repeatedly in a disturbed forest fragment adjacent to an open drainage channel within the city of Xalapa, Veracruz (19°31'10.401"N, 96°54'42.297"W; 1342 m asl). Although it is a common species present in almost all of Mexico, excluding some areas of the southeastern part of the country, this record is the first for the city of Xalapa and complements other Great Horned Owl records for the central region of Veracruz state.

Keywords : urban avifauna; central Veracruz.
