Abstract

RAMIREZ-ALBORES, Jorge E.. Records of the Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in Mexico City and adjacent areas. Huitzil [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.2, pp.110-115. ISSN 1870-7459.

I report records of the Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in six sites of Mexico City and adjacent areas. I observed nests and several individuals of this species from August 2008 to March 2012. The nests were built on eucalyptus and palm trees, and I observed nesting activity and chicks in one site only. The size of the groups observed when flying and in nests ranged from 2 to 14 individuals. These observations are noteworthy because of the lack of records, suggesting an increase in its distributional area in México. This requires the implementation of control strategies to avoid the expansion of this species in Mexico, through the relocation of individuals in aviaries as well as the removal of nests.

Keywords : Monk Parakeet; exotic species; parrots; Mexico City; Mexico.
