Abstract

PABLO LOPEZ, Rosa Elba. First record of Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in Oaxaca, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2009, vol.10, n.2, pp.48-51. ISSN 1870-7459.

I report the first record of the Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in the city Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca. I recorded several individuals of this species between May 2008 and May 2009. Four monk parakeet nests were found in the recreational park Bosque El Tequio, located 5 km to the south of the city. All nests were built on eucalyptus trees. This note represents the first record of a breeding population of the Monk Parakeet in southern Mexico. Further studies are required to determine whether the population of Monk parakeets in Oaxaca is stable, and whether this exotic species will have a negative impact on native wildlife within the urban-rural-agricultural matrix in which it was recorded.

Keywords : exotic species; Oaxaca de Juárez; urban invasion; Psittacidae.
