PARRA PEREZ, Mariana Y; GRAHAM PONTONES, Sergio y GARCIA AGUIRRE, Andrea D. Epidemiological characteristics of erythema toxicum in newborns in a private hospital. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2022, vol.20, n.2, pp.163-167. Epub 31-Oct-2022. ISSN 1870-7203. https://doi.org/10.35366/104278.
Toxic erythema is a common benign dermatological condition in newborns, it appears in the first 48 hours of life. It is usually spontaneously resolved. Currently, there are no clear epidemiological data, reporting incidences from 3.7% to 72%, so we aimed to identify the epidemiological characteristics of toxic erythema in newborns, treated at Hospital Angeles Pedregal. An analytical, observational, prospective, and longitudinal study was carried out. During the months of July to December 2020, all newborns who were admitted to the physiological nurseries of Hospital Angeles Pedregal were followed, closely monitoring the appearance of signs of toxic erythema. Of 331 newborns attended, 50.8% were women, with a mean age of 38 ± 1 SDG. The incidence rate for toxic erythema was 4.5 cases in 1,000 infants (45%). The most important risk factor was the route of birth by cesarean section RR 1.2 (95% CI 1.07-1.3). Unlike the expectant management recommendations, we observed a decrease in dermal lesions when applying topical treatment. We propose to carry out cohorts that allow a longer observation of the newborn.
