Introduction:

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. The arterial system underwent structural changes in an accelerated way due to arterial hypertension. The determination of the central arterial pressure through the radial pressure waves has an important predictive value of cardiovascular complications.

Material and methods:

Pilot, prospective, descriptive and longitudinal study to evaluate the arterial stiffness by tonometry by radial flattening and the comparison between the different antihypertensives.

Results:

Of the 52 patients assessed, there was a decrease in arterial stiffness in patients who started antihypertensive treatment with calcium channel blockers of 94.75 ± 24.82% in the initial measurement at 78.38 ± 25.64% in the final measurement (p = 0.01).

Conclusions:

There is evidence of decreased arterial stiffness in patients who initiate antihypertensive treatment with calcium channel blockers. However, we need of subsequent studies to evaluate the maintenance of the same and the impact on the reduction of cardiovascular risk.
