MAZA-ASTIAZARAN, Carlos de la; GONZALEZ-VERGARA, Carolina e BIELETTO-TREJO, Olivia. Retrospective study of the incidence of sarcomas in a private general hospital in Mexico City. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.1, pp.23-27. ISSN 1870-7203.
Sarcomas are a large and heterogeneous group of diseases which origin arises in mesenchymal cells. There is a wider classification of sarcomas which divides the soft tissue dependent sarcomas and malignant bone tumors witch are originated from bone and cartilage (osteosarcoma and condrosarcoma). Sarcomas can occur anywhere in the body because of connective tissue, preferently in extremities (most of all lower). The type most often seen in adults is liposarcoma, while in pediatric patients are mainly dependent on bone, either osteosarcoma or Ewing’s sarcoma. Due to the lack of symptoms, they are usually diagnosed at advanced stages and as much as 10% of cases with metastasis. In this article we present the incidence of sarcomas in a retrospective study in 11,348 samples that were sent to the pathology department in a period of three and a half years in Ángeles Mocel Hospital (Mexico City), making a comparison between the obtained results with international literature.
