Abstract
GONZALEZ FLORES, José Gustavo and MARIN TELLO, Ma. Isabel. Women's strategies facing the unfulfillment of marriage promises. Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2016, n.64, pp.47-68. ISSN 2007-963X.
This paper aims to study the unfulfillment of marriage promises based on cases registered in the Taximaroa ecclesiastical court in the Michoacán bishopric. Women who complained aimed to denounce that their honour was sullied following the unfulfilled marriage, or alternatively, to claim a compensation dowry. Such cases help to understand the importance of marriage back then, as well as the strategies used by plaintiffs, either men or women, in order to win the case. For instance, women pretended to be appear as weak, vulnerable and "cheated on" with respect to men, who allegedly took advantage of them in order to have sexual relations. The defendants did not only refuse these accusations but also labeled women as dishonest and libertines.
Keywords : unfulfillment; marriage; sexuality; women's strategies; Taximaroa.
