This article analyses political change and social movement’s situation in Veracruz, arguing that their dynamics and demands go further to the sole issue of democratic transition, moving to the terrain of neoliberalism and their interrelations as an strategic axis for it. From this perspective, after introducing the issue of post-democracy with some nuances on the “democratic momentum” which preceded it, national political change is interpreted. This imposes a broader historical look on Mexico’s sociopolitical processes, its continuities and discontinuities. Finally, the scenario of political change in Veracruz is examined, as well as the panorama of successive social movements’ positions along the trajectory of transition and neoliberalism in the last part of the article.
