Abstract

MORENO HERNANDEZ, Hugo César. Time and death in transnational gangs in El Salvador. Tla-melaua [online]. 2017, vol.11, n.42, pp.158-184. ISSN 2594-0716.

The present article presents the vision of Salvadoran gang members in relation to death and how their tie association to lethal criminal activities makes them see and experience time as a perpetual moment of the here and now. Its diachronic possibilities are the hospital, jail and the cemetery. The facts are taken by allowing the gangsters speak their word as a vision of life. Some former Salvadoran gang members of the 18 and active members as well as a Mara Salvatrucha gang member of the calmados give some insight towards their ways of life. This distinction is important since it provides information on how death rules over the daily lives of these gang members formed in complex groups that are simplified by criminalization policies.

Keywords : Transnational gangs; El Salvador; criminalization of youth; parallel time; counter power.
