Resumen
SOLIS ROBLEDA, Gabriela. Eclesiastic “Probanzas” and Yucatecan Secular Church Development. Península [online]. 2018, vol.13, n.2, pp.9-41. ISSN 1870-5766.
This article deals with the analysis of the role played by ecclesiastics with their search of royal rewards for services (mercedes), revealed by the probanzas they made recording these services. The hope of eventually receiving a royal reward encouraged their performance in the activities necessary to secure the functions of the secular Church. The grants they desired centered on the concession of a privilege or service, or the administration of a parish, especially that of an indian one. In the case of the Yucatecan bishopric, the search for these mercedes acquired greater relevance due to the economic model based on nobility that prevailed in colonial times, especially during the first century of the Span- ish rule, at a time when the probanzas presented in this paper where made. This article also pays attention to the similarities and differences between the ecclesiastical inquiries and those made by the laity, as well as the quest of the creole clergy to receive preferential treatment in the concessions.
