Abstract

DEPETRIS, Carolina. Arte y ciencia en el viaje pintoresco de Frédéric de Waldeck. Península [online]. 2009, vol.4, n.2, pp.13-31. ISSN 1870-5766.

The objective of this article is to explain the link between a certain conception of art and science in the so-called "picturesque travels," in vogue from the mid-eighteenth century to the first half of the nineteenth century. We will use Frédéric de Waldeck's journey through Yucatan as an example, using two types of documents: his text, Voyage pittoresque et archeologique dans la province d'Yucatan (Amerique Centrale), pendant les années 1834 et 1836, and the paintings and engravings that he produced during his trip.

Keywords : picturesque travel; Frédéric de Waldeck; Yucatan; nature; gardens; ruins.
