Abstract

TOME-HERNANDEZ, Griselda et al. Strategies for family reproduction in Santa María Moyotzingo, Puebla, México. agric. soc. desarro [online]. 2014, vol.11, n.1, pp.93-111. ISSN 1870-5472.

This article has the objective of analyzing agricultural and non-agricultural strategies as mechanisms of economic diversification that allow the reproduction of Peasant Domestic Units (PDUs) in the community of Santa María Moyotzingo, municipality of San Martín Texmelucan, Puebla, within a context of industrialization and globalization. In terms of methodology, the study was supported by field work performed from August to November 2010, with a quantitative and qualitative approach, and with documental revision. The results indicate that with the establishment of industries, Moyotzingo changed from an agricultural society to an industrial society. Therefore, the range of non-agricultural activities broadened and multiactivity inside the PDUs was intensified. A partial devaluation of agricultural and livestock activities was also observed, among heads of households of the PDUs, as well as complete devaluation among their children. Non-agricultural monetary income became as important as the agricultural; however, the integrality of these allows the support of agricultural activity and reproduction of the PDU.

Keywords : agricultural reproduction strategies; non-agricultural reproduction strategies; industry; peasant domestic units.
