The Colombian Peace Agreement has the main objective of putting an end to the conflict in the country through an unique peacebuilding mechanism. All the measures taken in order to ensure peace in Colombia are based on this Agreement. The role of international organizations is fairly marginal and their work is closely tied to the Colombian Peace Agreement’s provisions. Nevertheless, the United Nations wanted to contribute to peace in the country, despite the Colombian State having played a leading role in the peacebuilding process. The international organization’s task is merely complementary, but it is also tightly linked to the Colombian State’s decisions. The Peace Agreement is conceived as an instrument that governs the necessary foundations for effective peacebuilding in Colombia.
