This article makes an exhaustive review of the standards set out by International Human Rights Law, both in substantive and procedural law, regarding the legal recognition of name change according to each person’s gender identity. Moreover, it proves the incompatibility of Costa Rican law provisions with these international standards. Finally, this article proposes a conforming interpretation of the Costa Rican law to tackle these difficulties.
