Abstract

The present paper analyses the new role of the Arctic region in the International Law. Firstly, the work presents the different definitions of the Arctic and going straight to issues like sovereignty and territory. Further, it considers certain aspects on cooperation and governance in the region, especially the role of the Arctic Council. Next, the paper outlines major aspects of the Arctic region that renewal its interests nowadays in a legal and geostrategic position: the extended continental shelves, the navigation maritime passages and the significant energetic potential. In the end, the article deals with the debate on the need (or not) of comprehensive international treaty for the Arctic region.
