Resumen

BELLO ARELLANO, Daniel. From Rejection to Acceptance: Nationality as a Feature Differentiating Immigrants in the Discourse of Opinion Columns in Chile (2017-2019). Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2023, vol.18, e641.  Epub 24-Mar-2023. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2023.v18.641.

This paper examines the strategies used to discursively construct an image of immigrants based on certain identity traits linked to their nationality in a collection of 175 editorials and opinion columns published in Chile between 2017 and 2019. This discourse analysis enabled an identification of the main nationalities referred to in this body of work (Haitian, Venezuelan, Peruvian, and Colombian) and to observe how the most frequently mentioned nationalities are characterized in the text and used argumentatively. The analysis revealed a differentiated use of nationality as a sign of more or less «radical» otherness. It also showed a frequent use of a migrant’s nationality in unfavorable arguments regarding migration, and a recurrent link —in the same respect— between the Haitian nationality and problematic or threatening situations.
